Create A Reading Nook For Them
As you are certainly aware, it doesn’t take much for your child to create an environment that they are comfortable in. Whether it is draping blankets over the backs of the dining chairs or stacking the couch’s cushions in a strategic way, creating forts is a favorite activity for children of all ages. Why not encourage your young one to build their own little reading nook? It doesn’t take much, and it might be all they need to relax and settle down with a book.
Be A Good Example
Your child is picking up on things every single day, and since you are one of their heroes, you can count on them to follow your lead. If they never witness you get into a book, it is likely that they aren’t going to be highly motivated to read themselves. Make sure that you are being a good example and showing them how enjoyable it is to read. Set aside some time every single day where the two of you sit down and read, even if it is just for thirty minutes!
Let Them Read Everything
Books aren’t the only thing that you should have them read! Anything helps improve their reading skills! Let them read through the mail, get them children’s magazines, even have them go through a cookbook! While on the road, have them read out road signs, license plates, billboards, etc.
Bring Them To The Library
The library is, of course, a treasure trove of reading material. Make a little field trip out of it, and spend the day at your local library with your child. Let them explore the books on their own and read whatever book catches their eye. Just make sure that the books they are choosing are appropriate for their reading level. If they already are struggling to get through a book, they will become even more frustrated if they try to get through a book that is a little bit beyond their current abilities.
Talk With Them About What They Are Reading
When your child finishes the book that they are currently reading, or even just a chapter, make sure that you talk with them about it. What was their favorite part? Favorite character? Have them give you a brief synopsis of the book. This will go a long way in helping them improve their reading comprehension skills and will also be a great family activity.
Surround Them With Reading Material
The most important thing for you to do aside from supporting your little one’s reading is to make sure that they have a plethora of options! Make it as easy as possible for them to have access to reading material. Let them know that reading isn’t just something to be done at school, but can happen wherever they may be!
If you follow these simple tips, it’s a sure thing that you will have a little reader on your hands! At Compass Learning Center, we will make sure that we are encouraging their reading habits as well! As any parent knows, it can be incredibly difficult to drop your kid off at the child care center. They are your whole world, and if they aren’t used to being away from you, it can be pretty distressing. But the fact of the matter is, they have to get used to it! It’s just a part of life and growing up. However, separation anxiety can be really difficult to cope with, for parents and for the child. In this blog post, we will provide you with a few tips to help your child deal with the situation and realize that it really isn’t so scary being away from you. If you have any questions about child care in Coon Rapids, Blaine, Isanti, or East Bethel or you are looking to enroll your child, then please be sure to reach out to us today.
What Is Separation Anxiety?
It should come as no surprise that your kiddo feels safe and comfortable around you, so when they are left somewhere without you (like at daycare), it can be a pretty jarring experience. Separation anxiety can begin as early as infancy, and can last all the way through their preschool years. While there can be varying degrees of anxiety, most often children will throw a tantrum that includes crying, becoming extra clingy, or even throwing random objects.
It is important for you to acknowledge their struggles, but not to support these erratic behaviors. If you decide to change your plans and stay with them, it will only encourage them to do it again next time since they will believe that they can always convince you to stay around. It is so important that your child begins to understand that they can’t always be with you. Once they realize that it isn’t so bad without you, they’ll begin to work on their social skills and won’t be so scared next time they are dropped off at our daycare center or any other activity.
While it is obviously the fear of being away from you that causes separation anxiety in your child, there are a few underlying causes that can make the situation even worse for your little one. These include:
Stress – The world can seem like a pretty wild place for your child as they are growing up. Just trying to understand the way things work can be pretty daunting for them, especially if they are undergoing extra stress in their lives. This could include the loss of a loved one (including a pet), if you have moved recently, or if you are currently going through a divorce. All of these are triggers that can cause separation anxiety disorder.
New Surroundings – Your child likes having a regular routine and being in places that they are used to and feel comfortable in. If they suddenly find themselves in an unknown area, this can cause them to feel lost and out of place. New surroundings are a major cause of separation anxiety. It’s important for you to teach them that exploring new places is actually exciting and a part of life.
Overprotective Parenting – We know that your child is your world and you will do everything that you can to help them feel safe. Unfortunately, being extra protective of them can be a detriment to their growth. Of course you always want to be there for them, but it is so important to let them journey out on their own and discover new people and places on their own.
What Can You Do?
As a parent, it can be extremely difficult watching your child struggle with separation anxiety. The good news is, there are a variety of things that you can do to help them through it. It is also important to remember that it is only a phase and they will realize pretty quickly that they are completely fine when you are not around. One of the most important things that you can do is listen to them and respect their feelings. While it may not seem like a big deal to you, they might think otherwise. Talk with them about what they are going through and make sure that you are supportive. You also want to be sure to remain calm throughout the situation. You are your child’s hero and they are learning so much just by watching how you react to certain problems. Be a good example for them so that they will follow your lead. It is also great to provide them with small rewards/positive reinforcement when they behave appropriately.

Some out there (likely without kids of their own) have a misconception that pre-kindergarten education isn’t incredibly important. What could children learn at such a young age anyway? Shouldn’t they just be playing and having fun? Of course they should be having fun, but the reality is, early childhood education is crucial to their development. Everything that they are learning before kindergarten will become the foundation of how they learn and handle their classes in their future. If they don’t have a solid educational base, their classes will be intimidating to them and they may find themselves behind their classmates.
Here at Compass Early Learning, we want to help. We not only provide unparalleled child care so that your child is safe and comfortable when you are away, but we are also proud to include a STEM curriculum in our teachings. But what exactly is STEM and why is it important? That’s what we will be discussing in the blog post! If you have any questions or you are looking to enroll your little adventurer in our child care center in Blaine or Coon Rapids, then go ahead and contact us today!
What Is STEM?
It is unlikely that you haven’t heard someone reference STEM education or have seen toys labeled as “STEM toys,” but unless your child has already been a part of a STEM program, you probably have some questions about what it really is. To simplify the program’s focus as much as possible, you can look at the words that make up the acronym: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
The world that we live in is constantly evolving, and these four topics are at the forefront of innovation. Science is all around us, technology obviously plays an important role in our lives, engineering is the reason that we have roads, bridges, and even spacecraft, and mathematics are involved in nearly every single occupation and everyday tasks. STEM-based education programs are designed to provide students the tools that they need to succeed in the future. It involves hands-on activities as well as letting the young ones gain real-world knowledge in their classes.
However, STEM education is so much more than that! At our child care center, we provide a fun and educational environment that encourages the children to be observant and ask questions about the world and how things work. This is so pivotal to their early childhood education and will help them to be one step ahead in their lives. We’ve said it before and, more than likely, we’ll say it again, but the children are our future, and giving them 21st-century tools and knowledge will be so critical for them. The following quote from the National Science Foundation hits the nail on the head:
“In the 21st century, scientific and technological innovations have become increasingly important as we face the benefits and challenges of both globalization and a knowledge-based economy. To succeed in this new information-based and highly technological society, students need to develop their capabilities in STEM to levels much beyond what was considered acceptable in the past.”
What Are The Benefits For Your Child
There are so many benefits that come with enrolling your child in a STEM program. This is the reason that it is increasing in popularity year after year and more and more schools and child care centers are adding it into their curriculum. Here are just a few of the nearly endless benefits of STEM education:
STEM Education Doesn’t Have To Stay In The Classroom
The things that your child will learn through our STEM curriculum will travel with them wherever they go, and the best part is, you can help them with it and learn a thing or two yourself! Try adding some STEM activities to your time at home and when you’re out on an adventure. If you would like to learn more or are raring to sign them up for our child care center in Blaine and Coon Rapids, then simply give us a call today!
