Dramatic Play

Our dramatic play room can be transformed into a pirate ship, the moon, or an enchanted forest, which is a really great thing! Children are allowed to fully embrace their imagination, their creativity, and learn skills about cooperation and how to act in group settings. Dramatic play is an integral part of early childhood development, and our preschool believes in taking a holistic approach in getting children ready for their future. This means more than just exposing them to new learning concepts, like math and science, but actually letting them figure out who they are, how to interact in groups, and other skills that should be learned as early as possible. To take a tour of our preschool, contact one of our two locations today! Compass Child Care can be found in Coon Rapids and Blaine, and with flexible hours, affordable pricing, and convenient locations, there is no reason not to enroll your child in our preschool today.

Types Of Dramatic Play
Dramatic play can look different due to the two different types: unstructured and structured. Pretend play may just look like “playing” but it is an integral part in the learning process. Children should be encouraged to take part in this play, and need plenty of opportunities to engage in the activity.
  • Structured play - Structured play has a predetermined set and a desired outcome. The teacher will set up a scenario for the children to play into , and the children get to choose and assign roles before working through the situations that arise. There is usually a lesson that is learned at the end.
  • Unstructured: Unstructured is, just as the name implies, not planned. Children get to choose their own scenarios and create a set with what is available to them. They still assign roles, but their creativity can run wild and free. They may choose to make their space a pirate ship, a spaceship, or a veterinarian office.

The Benefits Of Dramatic Play
Dramatic Play Teaches Self-Control

Preschoolers can often act on impulse, especially when they are in an exciting environment where they are able to express themselves. In dramatic play situations, children are able to accept roles and are inspired to stick to them because they are rules to follow. In these situations, they are able to organize and coordinate with others, controlling their impulses.

Conflict Resolution
Whether the child is participating in unstructured or structured dramatic play, both scenarios create an avenue for conflict resolution. It is not uncommon for disputes to arise during playtime, but dramatic play gives children the chance to work through any disagreements and work out their differences. Preschoolers will arrange a compromise that makes both sides happy, which not only helps them form conflict resolutions skills, but also aids in helping them consider alternative perspectives as they recognize the view of others.

Dramatic Play Helps Empower Your Child
Dramatic play is empowering because kids can choose from and accept their roles in various scenarios, being able to play out and have control over difficult, sometimes even traumatic experiences. When children are playing out particularly difficult scenarios, they feel empowered and strong. For example, if a child has lived through a car accident they may choose to be a doctor or a paramedic. Children do not yet think internally, so dramatic play can help children explore their own thoughts and feelings about a scenario that they’ve seen or heard in real life. In a way, it helps them practice living in the real world.

Compass Early Learning strongly believes in the benefits of dramatic play, which is why we have included the program in our preschool. The development of your child, whether it is cognitive, social, emotional, or physical, is very important to us. Schedule a tour with our preschool by contacting us today.
